Heineman open to school levy idea

For the first time, Gov. Dave Heineman said Monday that he is willing to consider common property tax levies and a common governing board as part of a solution for the Omaha-area school dispute.

Millions pledged for South stadium

A proposal to create an athletic complex with a home football and soccer stadium for Omaha South High School has attracted pledges of more than $3 million, says the group pitching the plan. That's a big chunk of the $5 million that it would take to build the complex at historic Collin Field, at 22nd and L Streets.




Kids these days . . . show gratitude

Public servants are on the minds of students at Bellevue's Cornerstone Christian School this month. They've been writing letters to librarians, garbage collectors, police officers, firefighters and others as part of the school's "Attitude of Gratitude" program. On Monday, it was U.S. Rep. Lee Terry's turn to receive the students' gratitude for his public service.




Grant will make Bluffs school safer

Plans to put fire sprinklers in an aging Council Bluffs elementary school will move forward with a $150,000 federal grant. The money, awarded through the Iowa Department of Education, will help pay for a fire sprinkler system for Rue Elementary School at 3326 Sixth Ave. A new fire detection and alarm system also will be installed.
