Hamilton pulls plug on Knights' streak

WORLD-HERALD
NEWS SERVICE

HAMILTON, Ontario - Brad Winchester scored on a power play with 6:09 remaining in the third period Sunday afternoon to give Hamilton a 3-2 victory over the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, snapping Omaha's American Hockey League winning streak at five games.

"We played well in spurts, but (Hamilton) just played harder from the beginning," Omaha coach Ryan McGill said. "And they outcompeted us on specialty teams, which was the biggest difference."

The Bulldogs (23-32-0-3) scored on 2 of 9 power-play chances, while Omaha went 1 for 8.

Winchester, who also had two assists and was named the game's No. 1 star, beat Omaha goalie Brent Krahn with Craig MacDonald in the penalty box for interference.

The Knights (23-24-2-7) had tied the game only two minutes earlier on Ajay Baines' second goal in as many games. It came at the 11:09 mark with Derek Couture and Zenith Komarniski assisting.

David Moss maintained his hot scoring touch with the game's first goal, coming 2:41 into the second period with assists from Mark Giordano and Richie Regehr. But the Bulldogs tied the game less than two minutes later on Marc-Antoine Pouliot's 13th of the season.

The Knights, still in fourth place in the AHL's West Division, continue their longest road trip of the season with a game in Manchester (N.H.) on Wednesday. Omaha will return home on March 3 after road games Friday night in Rochester and Saturday in Toronto.
