Mav hockey player signs NHL contract

University of Nebraska-Omaha forward Bill Thomas has signed an entry level NHL contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, General Manager Michael Barnett announced today. Thomas will forego his final two years of college eligibility and report to Phoenix immediately.

UNO hockey takes another step

The UNO hockey team didn't want to be thinking about the big picture so soon this weekend. But the Mavericks returned to Omaha happy with their season as a whole, even if they didn't like the way it ended. And it's where 2005-06 ended, UNO coach Mike Kemp said, that will define the ninth and biggest season for the program.

Mavericks' QB competition heats up

Zach Miller came to UNO after walking on at Nebraska. Last year, as a sophomore, he earned playing time at quarterback for an 8-3 team that reached the NCAA Division II playoffs with a four-year starter under center. Yet, despite the departure of Brian Masek, Miller doesn't feel like he's a lock to be the starting quarterback next season for the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

BU second-period flurry douses Mavs

Top-ranked Boston University scored six goals in the second period in posting a 9-2 victory Friday over the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the first round of the NCAA Division I hockey tourney at Worcester, Mass.

Mavs need production, not just from big three

There are other players on the University of Nebraska at Omaha's roster besides Scott Parse and Bill Thomas who are capable of posting gaudy numbers. And now that the 20-14-6 Mavs will be skating in their first NCAA tournament, the team wants more than any other time this season to be as balanced as it can. Two of the highest-scoring teams in the nation will face off Friday when No. 15 UNO opens the tournament playing top-rated Boston University.

Spring drills still on ice for UNO football

UNO will give spring football another try on Saturday. The Mavericks postponed the opening of practice for a third consecutive day Wednesday when workers couldn't move the heavy, wet snow off Caniglia Field without damaging the field turf. The snow that fell Monday and Tuesday has caused the University of Nebraska at Omaha to re-work its original plans.

Trivia time: Name the three teams that will be skating in the Worcester, Mass., NCAA hockey regional this weekend that have a Hobey Baker finalist on their roster. If your answer included Boston University, the No. 1 team in the country, you lose. And lately, teams haven't been able to do anything but lose when they skate against the Terriers.

UNO, Quinn reunite in tournament

David Quinn can't help being thrilled about seeing the UNO hockey team, a program he had a hand in building, make it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Unfortunately, Quinn also has no choice about wanting the Mavs' NCAA stay to be a brief one. Quinn, a 1989 Boston University graduate, is in his second season as Boston University's associate head coach. UNO meets BU Friday.

UNO hockey breaks NCAA ice

The University of Nebraska at Omaha men's hockey team has earned a No. 4 seed and will travel to the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., for the Northeast Regional of the 2006 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship, the NCAA Division I hockey committee announced Sunday.
