Artist inspired by close encounters

Wildlife artist Anthony J. Padgett's life changed 15 years ago when he attended a Ducks Unlimited art show. "I can do this," he thought to himself as he looked at the various waterfowl and wildlife paintings on display. He can. His paintings of birds are so lifelike that many viewers believe they are photographs. Padgett, who recently brought his talent to Omaha, finished 15th this year - his highest placement ever - in the federal duck stamp competition.

Antelope painting is a stamp champ

Zach Even is no stranger to competition. He threw the discus, javelin and hammer at Chadron State and still owns the school hammer record of 184 feet, 31/2 inches he established as a senior in 2003. But Even, an art director for Cabela's catalog department in Sidney, Neb., was a mess Thursday after learning that he had won the Nebraska habitat stamp competition.
