This was the type of night pitchers typically dread. A night when a 25 mph wind was howling straight out to left-center field. A night when earned-run averages tend to dramatically inflate. Five Omaha Royals pitchers battled through the blustery conditions and slowed down the prospect-laden Nashville Sounds just enough to pull out a 6-4 Pacific Coast League baseball win Saturday night before 3,973 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Omaha pitchers D.J. Carrasco, Dennis Tankersley, Nate Field, Santiago Ramirez and Byron Embry allowed a combined 12 hits, but battled through tough conditions to keep the scoreboard from lighting up like a pinball machine. "You can't get too caught up in worrying too much about the wind blowing out," said Omaha hitting coach Terry Bradshaw, who is running the team with manager Mike Jirschele off this weekend. "You just have to make your pitches and let your defense make the plays behind you." Embry came in with the tying run on base in the ninth and promptly uncorked a wild pitch to advance both runners into scoring position. He then recovered to strike out Kevin Orie and Brad Nelson to end the game. Embry pumped his right fist after retiring Nelson for his seventh save. "Embry has been working on his off-speed pitches," Omaha catcher Scott Walter said. "He got ahead of some hitters and was able to use his breaking ball. . . . You just have to make good pitches, especially on a day like this where you need to keep the ball down." Carrasco started and allowed just one run, but finished one out short of recording the win. He came out because of a pitch limit with two outs in the fifth. He struck out six and walked one in only his third start. "We got a great performance out of D.J.," Bradshaw said. "He kept us in the game and that's all you can ask." Tankersley was credited with the win after following Carrasco with 11/3 scoreless innings. The Royals (15-15) have won the first two games of the four-game series with the Sounds (16-14), the Milwaukee Brewers' Class AAA affiliate. Omaha led 4-2 before Chris Truby and Aaron Guiel connected on solo homers in the seventh and eighth innings for two runs that proved to be valuable. "You are talking about two veteran guys who know how to play the game," Bradshaw said. "They really delivered." Contact the Omaha World-Herald newsroom Copyright ©2005 Omaha World-Herald®.
