Beyond Taylor, QB wide open

First rule in the Bill Callahan school of recruiting quarterbacks: Get all you can now and sort them out later. Even as the Nebraska football team moves through spring practice with its QB position in solid condition, the wheels continue to spin behind the scene.

Two Huskers are filling big shoes

Nebraska should be solid across the defensive line again, with Dagunduro and Cryer replacing two NFL hopefuls.

Nebraska's Jackson goes 'home'

Young Leon Jackson was called to the headmaster's office soon after second semester started. There were issues to discuss. No one really knew who Leon was anymore. Perhaps an appointment, a serious heart-to-heart, would straighten things out. The 19-year-old recalls his superior asking, "Leon, where are we going to put you?" "I want to go home," Jackson responded. Turns out, home to Jackson doesn't mean Pasco, Washington; home is the offensive backfield.

Carriker's makeover super-sized

On Feb. 1, Burger King announced a plan to issue public stock for the first time in its 52-year history, in part to bolster a company that had recently lost ground in the burger wars. Is it merely coincidence that 300-pound Adam Carriker revolutionized his diet and ditched the drive-thrus just a few weeks earlier? Since the last time Carriker slipped into a red uniform, he's traded Whoppers for grilled bird, afternoon class for the East Campus weight room. He's morphed from All-Big 12 into "freak" status.

NU defense takes takeaways seriously

Nebraska's defensive numbers improved from 2004 to 2005, but its turnover numbers didn't follow suit. Find out how the Huskers will go about trying to log moreinterceptions and fumbles in 2006.

Huskers sizing up Slauson

What's next for Matt Slauson, the Nebraska offensive tackle who crashed the starting lineup late in his freshman year? His versatility meks him a candidate to move to offensive guard, but he'll stay at right tackle at least until junior college transfer Carl Nix arrives.

Huskers want to see if the I's have it

Nebraska started its search for Cory Ross' replacement with the first of 15 spring practices Wednesday at the Hawks Championship Center. The list of candidates expands in August when junior-to-be Brandon Jackson returns from shoulder surgery and junior college transfer Kenny Wilson joins the team. For now, it's the trio of heralded recruits from a year ago who step into the spotlight.

Phillips enjoys battle for time with tight ends

Without Matt Herian, maybe Nebraska tight end J.B. Phillips plays more. With Herian, maybe the Huskers have a better chance to win. It's not hard for Phillips to decide which is better. Phillips is the Huskers' returning starter at tight end, a junior-to-be who caught 15 passes last season. Behind him, NU also has returnees Josh Mueller and Clayton Sievers as spring practice begins today.

Leading receiver made swift ascent to the top

Nate Swift took note as Nebraska put together its 2006 football recruiting class. There were Menelik Holt and Maurice Purify and Will Henry all being lined up to arrive this summer. And Tyrell Spain had shown up in January after a semester detour. So the Husker receiver with the best statistics from last season immediately realized his work was only beginning.

NU kicks special teams up a notch

Some of the numbers were dreadful in 2004, and Nebraska football coach Bill Callahan preached that they had to get better. And he wasn't talking about offense and defense. "A year ago, I remember sitting here and talking about special teams and the emphasis we were going to put on it," Callahan says. "And we did that."

NU boosts talent, fills needs with 2006 class

As another signing day arrived at Memorial Stadium, Nebraska football coach Bill Callahan says the class of 24 includes help on the offensive line and defensive backfield.
