Amazing mounts

Omaha taxidermist Steve Evers always knew big whitetails were around. He saw the proof each fall as a flood of customers brought in their trophies to be mounted. "We mount some of the biggest deer killed in the state every year," said Evers, who recently moved his Wildlife Creations shop to 135th and B Streets. "We mounted the deer that won the Iowa Classic a couple of years ago." Evers is an avid deer hunter. But hunting during the rifle season is out of the question.

  • Our photo gallery contains 15 amazing mounts!

Papa Bear carves his own niche

Nick Jensen gave an artistic look at the split-trunk elm tree and saw a bird dog on point in one stump and a few quail huddled together in the other stump. In less than three hours, the ground was covered with sawdust and chunks of wood, and a dog and a quail had been formed out of the stumps. Jensen, 45, has been a commercial chainsaw carver since 1999. He will let the chips fall where they may during the Cattlemen's Ball, which this year will be near Milford, and at the River City Roundup in Omaha.

  • Our photo gallery gives you an inside look at Jensen's gift.

Road work helps Omaha women bond

Omaha's Ladies of the Evening are heading to New York City. No, it's not what you might be thinking. These ladies are runners who will be competing in the More Marathon next Sunday.

Sandhill crane fans have a choice of viewing spots

One of nature's most spectacular shows is warming up in central Nebraska along the Platte River. About 80 percent of the world's sandhill cranes fly there to rest, eat and socialize from mid-February through early April. The best viewing places can change from week to week or day to day, so bird watchers are urged to check ahead with the Crane Meadows or Rowe Sanctuary.
