WI's Smith, Toole grab baseball honors

Soon, West Harrison's Erik Smith and Council Bluffs Lewis Central's Justin Toole will be packing their bags for college. They should do it with a degree of satisfaction, since they packed about everything they could into their high school careers. Smith and Toole, western Iowa's Division I baseball recruits, are The World-Herald's honorary captains on the All-Western Iowa Baseball Teams, announced today.

7 Western Iowa players named 1st-team all-state

Seven western Iowa baseball players have been named first-team all-staters by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Heading the list is Council Bluffs Lewis Central senior Justin Toole, the captain of the Class 4-A all-state team. Toole, an Iowa recruit, finished 11-3 on the mound with a 0.52 ERA. The three-time first-team all-stater batted .457 with 37 RBIs for the 36-6 Titans.

Wendte hit hands title to Heelan

A bad-hop double and a bad-hop triple helped Cedar Rapids Xavier pull even with the Crusaders entering the bottom of the seventh, but Joe Wendte's RBI single gave Heelan a 4-3 victory over the Saints in the Class 3-A state title game. In front of a championship-session record crowd of 5,488, pinch-runner Mike Bisenius scored the winning run on Wendte's hit, and the No. 1-rated Crusaders responded with their second championship dogpile in five years.

Wilton caps perfect season with 2A title

Wilton recovered quickly after giving up a freak run and beat Carroll Kuemper 8-3 Saturday to win the Class 2A title and become the state's first unbeaten team in 32 years.

Kee wins record ninth state title

Kee routed longtime nemesis Granville Spalding 10-0 in five innings Saturday to win the Class 1A championship and claim its ninth state title. In finally breaking a tie with Norway for the most championships, Kee ended a 13-year title drought.
