Quick Search Tips

The easiest way to search is using the quick search. The quick search box is located on the top every page.

There are 2 ways to search for a story/article.

First, by default is the story search. The story search as the name implies will be searching the body of the story as well as the headline and brief. Use descriptive words to describe exactly what you're looking for. More general terms will give a larger number of results. After you have typed in your word(s) Click on GO. You will be taken to the search results page. The search result page lists all results by date and score. If your search produced no results you will receive this message- "No Matches Found". If you still are having troubles producing results you may want to try using the Advanced Search.

Second, is the site search. Select the site radio button and enter one or more words that you would like to search the site for. Click GO. The search engine produce results that match the words you entered. The search result page lists all results by date and score. If your search produced no results you will receive this message- "No Matches Found". If you still are having troubles producing results you may want to try using the Advanced Search.

Advanced Search Tips

You can increase your results by using the Advanced Search Engine.

Step 1: Select what you want to search for. Click on the "Search For"
drop-down box and select one of the following:

Page- Will produce pages as results not individual stories.
Story- Will search the body of a story as well as the headline and brief.

Step 2: Type in a few descriptive words in the "Search Text" box.
You can narrow your searches by selecting one of the following:

- All Words: This narrows your search . For example, typing Husker Football would only find stories that contain all of those words.
- Any Words: Type one or more words. For example, typing Cornhusker Football Scores would find stories with any or all the words.
- Exact Phrase: Type in an exact phrase. For example, typing Big Red Football would only find stories that contained that exact phrase.

You can narrow your search even more by using queries:

1. To find an exact phrase-

  • Put the phrase inside of double-quotes.
  • Example: "state capital"
  • 2. Include or exclude words -

  • To guarantee a keyword is always included in your search, place a plus sign (+) directly before the word with no spaces. To exclude a term, simply place a minus sign (-) before the word.
  • Example: +state -capital
  • Example: +"state capital" -omaha
  • 3. Using Wildcards -

  • By using an asterisk (*) at the end of a keyword, you can search for multiple forms of the word.
  • Example: laugh* (will find words such as laugh, laughing, laughter)
  • Step 4: Select how you would like your results sorted by. (Optional)
Click on the "Sort Results" by drop-down box and select date or closest match. Default is closest match.

Step 5: Select how many matching records you would like to be returned. The default is 10.

Step 6: Click on the Search button.
