Budget increasing spending 7.3 percent passes

State spending will increase 7.3 percent over the next 15 months under the $6.15 billion budget passed today by the Legislature.

Nebraska Latino entrepreneurs prosper

A recent Census Bureau report shows Nebraska's Latino-owned businesses opening at a rate faster than the U.S. average. And nationally, the Cornhusker state ranked No. 1 in the percentage increase in revenue generated by Latino business owners. Sales receipts in Nebraska reached an estimated $434 million in 2002, according to the study, which covered 1997 to 2002. That's a 207 percent increase from five years earlier.

A justification for the war?

Newly declassified documents about a 1995 meeting show collaboration between Iraq and al-Qaida and give some justification for the war against Iraq, says Bob Kerrey, the former Nebraska U.S. senator and 9/11 Commission member. However, Kerrey said the documents do not show a direct link between former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

Stabbing leaves one dead

A woman has been arrested in the fatal Monday night stabbing of a south Omaha man. Teresa Tippery was booked today on suspicion of manslaughter and weapon use in the death of Richard Tippery. In another overnight incident, police were called to near 38th and Corby Streets about 3:35 a.m. today. The initial report was of shots being fired. They found a shooting victim, who later died.

White House chief of staff Card resigns

White House chief of staff Andy Card has resigned and will be replaced by budget director Joshua Bolten, President Bush announced today amid growing calls for a White House shakeup and Republican concern about Bush's tumbling poll ratings.
