We understand that gathering all the information necessary to place an obituary can sometimes be difficult or confusing.

The following are answers to frequently asked questions about publishing Obituaries, In Memoriams and Cards of Thanks in the Omaha World Herald.

What is the difference between an Obituary and an In Memoriam?

An Obituary announces an individuals passing and typically includes information regarding services, visitation and burial.  It may also include details about their life such as education, employment, religious and civic affiliations and information about the family such as relatives, both living and deceased.

In Memoriams typically commemorate a special day such as the anniversary of ones passing, a birthday or a special holiday.  Scripture, poems and photos are welcome.

How much does it cost to place an obituary in the Omaha World Herald?

The rates are $4.65 per line per day, Monday through Saturday and $5.50 per line on Sunday.

A line consists of 30-35 characters including all letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces.  There is no extra charge for bold type.
Photos count for approximately 17 lines billed at the applicable line rate per day.

All obituaries are uploaded to our website and mobile app for a flat $20.00 charge.

The World Herald does not offer a free death notice.

Will you bill us for the cost of the obituary?

We can bill most funeral homes within our immediate area. If your funeral home is located outside the Omaha area or you do not work with us on a regular basis, we require prepayment with a credit or debit card or an electronic check prior to publishing the obituary.  You may request a credit application for future business.

We accept Visa, American Express and Discover.  (Mastercard is not accepted)

Obituaries placed by individuals are paid with a credit or debit card or an electronic check prior to publishing the obituary.

What is the deadline to place an Obituary, In Memoriam or Card of Thanks?

Our deadlines are:
3 p.m. Monday through Friday for next day publication
2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for next day publication

The Omaha World Herald is published 7 days a week with morning delivery to subscribers and newsstands.

What if I miss the deadline for a publication?

Unfortunately, you will need to choose the next available date.
If the date is unavailable on your screen, the deadline has passed.

All changes and corrections received after deadline will appear in the next available date of publication.

How many days do I have to publish an obituary?

All obituaries are published for a minimum of one day.
You may publish as many days as you wish beyond the one-day minimum.
Sunday is our highest circulation day followed by Wednesday.

If I have a photo, what format is acceptable?

You have the choice to use up to 2 photos.

In order to get the very best picture printed, please make sure that the photo is cropped, or use our Crop Tool and show just the face of your loved one.

We accept *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.gif, *.eps, *.png, *.pdf formats.

TIPS: Getting good quality images for your ad:
Use the highest resolution setting on your camera or cell phone to ensure the best reproduction in your ad.
Cell phone photos and photos saved from web sites are low resolution images that are optimized to look good onscreen and will not reproduce well in print.
If you are scanning a photo, make sure images are scanned at a high resolution. A low resolution scan will not reproduce well in print.
VERY IMPORTANT:  If the image looks blurry in the ad preview, it will print blurry.  We are not able to improve on an original poor quality image.

How can I ensure my Obituary text will look good?
